LOTS OF SPACE

Strengths: TONS OF ROOM TO STORE PICS, MUSIC AND EVEN MOVIES

Weakness: A little bulky

This drive is huge. It allowed me to back up my entire DVD collection without any compression. I only wish it was a little smaller. I also have a 1TB My Book Home Edition which is a perfect size, but I'm sure it wont be too long til they can make 2TB the same size. Also, for $419 I think the price per GB was good.

Mixed feelings about the Triple Interface 2TB My Book

Strengths: Relatively compact size with large capacity, thermostatically controlled fan, triple interface, backup software included

Weakness: Frequently powers on momentarily even when not connected to computer, loud initial spin-up, not a plug & play drive

~As someone with lots of music and movies, I needed more storage. I shopped eBay to gauge prices and finally decided on a 2TB My Book with the basic triple interface [usb 2, fw 400, fw 800] since eSATA is still relatively new. I found the item for $460 and was pleased to have an actively cooled, compact storage device that would last for a while before filling up.
~I first had to install the WD back-up manager before I could even use the drive at all; which I didn't have to do for my 250GB maxtor drive. I plugged the drive in before installing the software, and only 1TB was recognized; after installing all the software, it registered as the full 2TB (1.8 TB free). I realize that it's a small thing, but I'm spoiled by all my other plug & play devices!
~It took about 10 hours to put 260 GB onto the My Book using USB 2.0; I would have used FW 800, but my laptop only has a 1394 controller, so even with a 1394b card, I can only get 1394 speed...
~Shortly after transferring all my data and backing up current info from my laptop, my internal HDD was corrupted. On the bright side: at least I got to test out the backup system...however, I was a little less pleased than I expected to be. But since this was the first crash I had been through with an external HDD, I was probably just expecting too much. The backups I had made were not sufficient enough to revive my computer back to its earlier state. I still had to reload my software from the original discs. I think that the drive really did all it was supposed to do; I simply did not realize that backing up all your data would not guarantee that you could fully restore everything after a crash.
~In the My Book's defense, it gives you the option to schedule backups every day and to only back up new data. I am quite pleased with how fast it is, and especially with the ability to daisy chain other drives off of it.
~I don't know that I would make the exact same purchase again so quickly since 500GB drives are getting cheaper, but I certainly like not having 4 drives lined up across my desk to get the same capacity and its ability to use firewire. Furthermore, getting the extended warranty from western digital was far cheaper than a Squaretrade warranty...
~Overall, I would give this drive 8 out of 10.

Good, huge backup

Strengths: Easy to use, works seamlessly

Weakness: sometimes goes to sleep and prevents backups

Large storage capacity, 2x1gb drives, includes simple backup software. Haven't had a problem yet. Complete set of cables included, firewire, USB 2 and firewire 800. Quiet, I use it to back up a machine with all of my photos and music and highly recommend it.
