Great Drive, Great Price

Strengths: Quiet, HUGE, nice 8MB cache.

Weakness: ATA/100 instead of 133.

Found this bad puppy on sale @ Fry's for $70 the day after Christmas. Slapping on the $5 bonus rebate from PriceGrabber is just icing on the cake!! The drive is quiet, much more so than my Maxtor 160GB, although the Maxtor is ATA/133, so it serves as my boot drive. I put this 300GB monster in an external case, so now I can back up multiple systems. Highly recommended.

What hard drive case did you end up going with?

Thanks,

Hi there, I actually replaced a drive in a WD external case. It wasn't pretty. You can read my review about the experience here:

I suggest you visit the following link for advice on external cases:

Good luck!

Nice, spacious, quiet drive

Strengths: Very quiet Lots of storage space

Weakness: None

I have been using the Barracuda 7200.8 300 GB ATA100 drive for about a week now. It installed like a charm in my new MythTv linux system, and is very quiet and relatively cool. The only curious comment I would make is that the drive will occasionally go through short periods of "ticking" - I have read somewhere online that these are internal diagnostics that are supposed to end within a few days of use. They have not ended yet, though... Otherwise, a very nice drive for the money.

Seagate 300GB PATA

Strengths: Price, size, performance, reliability, warranty

Weakness: Warranty return procedure

Seagate has become one of the absolute best drives in the industry -- and they stand behind their products with a 5 year warranty.

The drive itself comes well packaged in the retail box along with everything you could possibly need to install it in your computer (except 3.5" -> 5.25" brackets if you need to mount it into a 5.25" bay -- but those are extra cost with any drive).

The drive uses the industry standard ATA100 interface and I expect it to be as good as the many other Seagate products I've purchased in the past.

The one downside is that Seagate charges $24 for a pre-replacement for any warranty repair, and you still have to pay return shipping on your drive (other manufacturers offer this service for free)... and within 5 years if you use the drive heavily you will likely need to take advantage of the warranty.

Seagate Barracuda 300 GB HD

Strengths: Cost at Circuit City after rebates: $99.00 plus tax. VERY fast and very quiet. Works with ADS Technologies Dual Link Combo Drive Kit USB 2.0. Great for backing up data via USB 2.0.

Weakness: Not a one (it could be free).

Outstanding value. Cost $99.00 plus tax at Circuit City. Installed in ADS Technologies Dual Link Combo Drive Kit USB 2.0 for external backup of 4 computer home LAN. HD and DLX185 are super quiet and fast. Complete format of HD in NTSF via USB 2.0 in about 6 minutes.

Easy to swap HD in DLX185 which can hold DVD and CDRW drives. Great for backing up 4 networked home computers. I connect to each computer thru USB for fast backup created by Norton Ghost 9.0 directly to this external HD. If computer is USB boot compatible image can be restored directly from this external HD.

Buy this HD and you won't go wrong considering price/capability.

300 GB PATA Delight

Strengths: 5 year warranty 7200 RPM 8 MB Cache

Weakness: "Only" 8 MB cache

I picked this drive up because I needed a HD fast and this was the best deal that a local store had. Not that I mind at all as this 300 GB Barracuda has great bang for the buck with 133GB platters, (uses 2.5 in this case), a 7200 RPM rotational rate (which should tranfer into faster average seek times) and a decent 8 MB of cache to help keep more oftenly used data closer to the rest of the computer system. This doesn't even take into account Seagate's best in class warranty as they offer 5 years. From my experience as well, Seagate's reliability is above average.
So why doesn't this drive deserve a full 5 stars? Simply because it is getting a little long in the tooth. This drive has less dense platters than the latest ones out today and it also has less cache. For example, even in the parallel ATA category that this drive is in, Segate has a almost the exact same drive (300 GB) built on their latest process that has 16 MB of cache and more dense platters at 160 GB each. Less platters = less of a chance of failure and the increased density generally improves the drive's speed. This doesn't even take into account the latest drives available with SATA/10K and native command queueing.
That being said, if you can find a deal on this drive, it will serve you well for many years and you can rest easy knowing that you are protected for the next five years. You did back up your data, right?

These Drives Are Total Failures...!

Strengths: Holds data...but just for a few months.

Weakness: Loses partitions, data, and MBR.

I have bought two of these particular 300GB Seagates and both have degraded to useless, of course i can return them to Seagate for refurbished drives, that sucks. Seagate says there is no recall on these, but two failures for me indicates something is quite wrong. Beware of massive data loss when using these drives. i've never seen anything like this, it is like a continuous total head and surface failure! have very good recovery tools on hand, all other drives on the systems are doing fine, it was just these drives, something is defective about them. they were purchased separately within 1 month of each other, they have become useless within 3-4 months. Avoid this drive or manufacture, sorry to say.

You are absolutely correct! I had a drive motor failure after 4 months. I have just lost my 3rd Recertified Hard Drive within 2 months. The first replacement wasn't recognized by my system. The second wouldn't finish a format. The current third cannot be read by SpinRite v6 and Seagate SeaTools could not see the drive in DOS. After booting up the system suddenly sees the drive, the partition is there and it says it's healthy"cough". I copied 48GB of games over to it, only to have my system blue screen. Don't buy it. The warranty means nothing if you keep losing your data. Recertified Hell!

My 3rd recertified drive failed. They verified that it was my 3rd, and are sending me a 400gb replacement. They initially told me that they were going to send me a 4th ST3300831A. After squawking, they agreed to send me a ST3400632a. ATA but the one I currently have runs great. 16mb cache helps quite a bit. I use it just for storage. I run 2 73gb Raptors striped which cook.

Ultra ATA, not Serial ATA

Strengths: Seems stable and fast. Installation disk made setup a snap.

Weakness: Not sure whether I can use this when I upgrade my computer next year. Tried transfering OS from my 60Gb to this harddisk but failed because NTLDR missing.

Bought this to replace my 60GB harddisk. So far no complaints except that I couldn't transfer my OS due to missing NTLDR. Kit came with screws and ribbon.

Did come across some negative reviews of this model elsewhere, but with a 5 year warranty, that's something none of the other HD manufacturers offer.

Avoid Seagate

Strengths: none

Weakness: reliability return policy

Seagate used to have a good reputation.

I bought 2 of these drives, from TWO DIFFERENT stores, about 2 months apart (unlikely that they're from the same bad batch).

One was installed in the PC, for data storage. The second was in USB enclosure and used as a mirror of the 1st drive. connected/turned on VERY rarely -- only to make backups.

The first one completely died after about 6 months (head clicks). When I turned to the 2nd backup drive (that has seen hardly any usage at all), it bad sectors and some of the files were corrupted.

Return policy blows. I have to pay for shipping to them? That's after their product lost my data? Even small companies like Kingston send you prepaid shipping labels. Shame on you seagate.

Additionally, my main disk, also a seagate 120gb, failed with frozen spindle motor after about 2-2,5 years. It cost me $1,600 to recover data.

Needless to say, NEVER again seagate.

Drives failed within a couple of weeks

Strengths: Works fine, is quite, 5 year guarantee--reason I bought it

Weakness: 2 out of 10 of these have failed within a couple of weeks of operation.

I bought 10 7200.9 drives in the last 6 months. I bought a 250 GB from Tiger Direct. It failed after a couple of weeks of use--Seagate replaced it. I then bought 9 300 GB Baracuda from Fry's. These were for a NAS now one of these has failed after running only a couple of weeks. Sounds like there is a problem in Seagate land.....

Awesome drive for the money!

Strengths: Lots of storage space; current sweet spot in terms of $/GB; quiet; 5-year warranty

Weakness: None!!

I used to be a WesternDigital afficianado, but after numerous returns (which were painless, in their defense), I decided to give my business elsewhere. This is my second Seagate drive, and so far I am sold! I just love the fact that they have a 5-year warranty! Indicates to me that they stand behind their product. Note that I have not had to deal with a warranty return, so cannot comment on whether this is as painless as it is w/ Western Digital. I use this for external storage of MP3s & pictures, so speed is not really an issue. There is a version out there that has a 16mb cache, but have not seen a need for it. Perhaps if it was your main C: drive, this might make sense. It sits in an external enclosure, right on my desk, and its as quiet as can be! Fantastic value in terms of GB per dollar, particularly if you can find some rebates out there.

Seagate Barracuda 300GB Ultra ATA HD

Strengths: Large size, very good performance, amazing 5-years warranty

Weakness: none

8MB buffer provides more stability and increases the read/write speed. 7200rpm could also offer neat performance. 5-years warranty also give us the relevant quality assurance. Seagate also has the prestigious brand name in the HD industry. I like it!!!

Seagate GOOOD

Strengths: big and fast

Weakness: none

It was a tough choice but the rebates were great. this is a great product and its backed with a 5 year, yeah, 5 years worth of backing. 300 gigs is a nice size amount for everyday life. I highly recommend this hard drive unit.
