WD GP 500GB 3.5 SATA

Strengths: Lower power consumption; running quiet; no as hot as the AAKS version.

Weakness: A bit slower than the AAKS version.

Western Digital has been known for its reliable hard drive products. This time it introduces the AACS line of green product hard drives which consume a little less power and run much quieter than the AAKS versions. The performance of WD GP 500GB 3.5 SATA is a little bit slower than the AAKS version but not noticeable for normal daily office computing. I expect that the AACS hard drive will last much longer than the AAKS version since heat is a key factor in hard drive failure in the long run.

Inexpensive and Above Average HD

Strengths: 1. Cheaper than others in the class 2. Faster than many others in the class 3. SATAII is the way to go

Weakness: Durability is unknown as GP is a new line. Some people say it doesn't last long and died on them very soon.

The WD GP 500GB is a new hard drive that is supposed to be green hard drive, which means, it's better for the environment. However, when we talk about performance, the GP doesn't disappoint any. It's SATA-II, 7200RPM, and its seeking speed is above average.

Western Digital has been known for making quality computer drives. I am glad that they start taking care of the environment and making these types of hard drives. I have been using this hard drive for couple months already and so far there is no issue. I will be looking forward for more of GP series in the future.

Green Power 500GB

Strengths: Less power consumption; quiet

Weakness: Slower performer?

I have a Windows Home Server which runs 24/7. This drive seemed like the perfect candidate, as high-performance drives would not get utilized in this system. I also wanted to save as much power as possible, since it runs all the time. I think this drive is pretty much a gimmick by WD, jumping on the "Green" bandwagon! They used to sell 5400 RPM drives for less money than 7200RPM, now they are selling it for more!! I think it runs as 5400RPM most of the time, which is nice and quiet. I don't hear any seek and rattle noises. Thus far, I am very happy. It does come with a 3-year warranty, which is derived from the serial-number on the drive (not the purchase date).

WD WD5000AACS 500GB green drive

Strengths: quiet, low heat

Weakness: slower, but that is the trade off for cooler operations

these are were used for a htpc build so low heat and low noise were paramount. if you are concerned about power draw like I was, then this is your drive. Current Requirements Power Dissipation Read/Write 6.00, Watts Idle 3.3, Watts Standby 0.97, sleep 0.97. in summary, energy efficient by a significant margin, quieter, cooler. lower overall temps may extend life of all case components.
